it must start at home! Parents need to know how important helping out at home is for their children. Most parents are in a hurry or want things done a certain way. As teachers, it is helpful for parents and to us to share how important daily jobs/chores are for the development of their children and for their success in school. There are age appropriate skills and abilities that children can and should do at home. Parents will be amazed by what children can and will do when time is taken to teach these skills. You cannot expect children to know how and when to do things a certain way, if you have not first taught them. Start young and start with small tasks. Inspect what you expect. Don't ask for perfection...allow for their way and imperfection. Congratulate a completed task...do not nit pick it apart or fix it. If there is a failure or mistake, redo the task together and demonstrate the correct way. Children will learn the value of a job well done and confidence will increase. They will learn problem solving. They will learn life-long skills. Parents will learn to let go of control and will see the value of teamwork in the home. Children have boundless energy! Use it to your advantage and then enjoy the extra time together as a family doing something fun! The positive benefits of children helping with things around the home goes far beyond checking off Dad and Mom's to do list!
