At the beginning of the year in K5, letter recognition can be tricky! I found these plastic pieces that could be snapped together. Before putting them out for the children to use, we played with them in a lesson. First, I held up one piece and asked them what letter could be made using the piece. Then we made it harder by holding up two pieces. When the student shared what letter, they got to write it on the board. If more than one student had an idea, they wrote their answer on the board as well. Students had to watch and listen to make sure they did not repeat a letter. Finally, we made it super hard! Students had to use three pieces to make a letter. Another activity, we put up the pieces on the board, and students sorted magnetic letters under each piece.
