Letter Monster

The first time I did this, it was a morning shower add-on to the normal, ordinary day.  My first thought in the morning is "How can I make learning fun today?"  Great ideas often hit me in the shower, driving to school, or washing dishes.  I had seen the little poem and knew I could draw a silly monster on the board and use the magnet letters.  It is a low prep activity that brought giggles to my friends!
This activity we pulled out letters from the monster's lunch bag.  Students gave letter name and/or sound.
And then...the next time...wouldn't it be more fun to actually feed the monster?!  I recycled a laundry detergent bottle...on a whim.  I was doing laundry and used up the last of it and was swishing water around to rinse.  I used a knife and kitchen scissors to cut a mouth opening.  I used a monster pattern from Google to cut out the felt pieces and hot glued into place.  For some of activities we fed the monster letters, blends, vowels, cvc words, and numbers.  Students liked to do this with a friend for smaller group review.
How fun would it be to have several monster friends on the shelf!?
