January- Writing help

Our focus September through December is learning all the letters.  By January, we have learned to recognize and form letters on paper.  We have been practicing putting the letters together to make blends and simple cvc words.  We have been building simple sentences.  Now we are trying to copy words and simple sentences from the top of the paper or from the board to the lines on our papers.  As we learn each phase of this process, we are talking about how to do it correctly.  "We do not want our letters sitting on top of each other.  We want space!  Just like your neighbor is not sitting on your lap right now...they are next to you."  I demonstrate how hard it is to read a word if it is all "smooshed together".  There is lots of laughter.  I post visual helps and we practice.  I give students a chenille stem for the noodle and a small pompom for the meatball.  We have used popsicle sticks for the spaces as well.
