Favorite Cereal Day! Be specific in communicating that you will be using the package in learning.
January is a hard month! We come off the holidays and time off school. Here in the Midwest it gets colder and most days are overcast. A fun January idea is for each student to bring their favorite cereal for snack. You will need to specify that you want the actual cereal box! This particular class each student brought a brand new box of cereal. We used the box for reading/phonics class. We looked for special sounds, vowels, and sight words. We did not open the boxes till snack time and I opened them. Trust me...this is important. I had cups/bowls for children and poured the cereal for them to keep germy hands out for parent sake and for sharing purposes. Children could try different cereals as they chatted.I found some of the cereal character color pages on the internet. They could choose one as they entered the classroom in the morning. They could use their crayons, colored pencils, or markers to color.
We used the cereal pieces again in math for counting out groups of 10. This time I gave them a spoon to practice fine motor skills...taking one piece out at a time and putting it in a row. You will be surprised how challenging it can be for your kindergarteners. We practiced adding and subtracting. You guessed it...they subtracted by eating! Depending on what cereals are brought in, you could also practice pattern building.
Needed: cups or small bowls, plastic spoons, wet wipes for sticky fingers
Always be aware of any allergy issues you may have. Do not share cereal if that is the case.
Students are responsible to pick up cereal pieces off the floor! "If you make a mess, clean it up!"
