Christmas program highlight

This was the year that my class started the entire program for the school. I wrapped the lights around them and we walked up onto the stage during the opening prayer as the lights went down. I plugged them in and then they recited this poem. It was the cutest thing ever!!! And they received laughter and applause as every single person there had experienced the frustration of Christmas lights that do not work after they are put in place! We went back later for our song. Our school had and still has the tradition of singing "Come On, Ring Those Bells" altogether (students and staff) while the littlest ones ring bells. It is the ending to a busy first semester as we get ready for the two week Christmas vacation.

December is a fun month in school!

We make our daily lesson plans all year. We set up our rooms with care and thought. We have a variety of manipulatives we collect and use. So when we throw in something new and different, the students know right away! DO NOT PUBLISH EVERY SINGLE THING YOU PLAN TO DO! JUST DON'T! I had a director that said, "You have to make this calendar this way and put all the things on it so the parents know and it makes the kids want to come to school." WHAT? NO! I want to create an atmosphere of expectation and fun. I wanted students to talk to their parents and answer the infamous question of the day, "What did you learn at school today!?" Children need to talk to their parents. Parents need to ask their children questions. Family time around the supper table should be full of sharing and excitement. But we are not seeing that these days. Parents are running their children around all over to activities after school...

Getting ready to graduate from K5

Every April we pull out the caps and gowns to practice putting them on and "zipping them up all by myself!" Never do for a child what they can do for themselves! And you must teach them how do all the things. I never did it for the child. I showed them. I started it while they watched. They had to be able to do it...and many of them struggled the first few times, but when they got it...there was a sense of pride and accomplishment! By the time it was time to do the pictures for the yearbook, we were ready to roll! I had all the robes ironed or steamed. The students could themselves ready fast. It was always so exciting to go outside...jumping and twirling and giggling. Our photographers always made it fun. The students showed me how much they had learned all year as I watched them wait patiently and follow directions. It was always a bittersweet day in mid-April!
