We are working to build speed and confidence in number recognition. How do we do that? We play with numbers! We counted and talked about what number comes after...and the animals helped us see that when we count left to right...the numbers get bigger!
Next we played 4 In A Row! I have a prize jar for when he got Four In A Row! He missed 1...the number 12. That is hard...its name doesn't give a clue which family it is in..."you just have to memorize it. We look to see which number comes first...the 1 in front tells us it is in the Teen family. 11 and 12 don't tell us...they show us!"
Lots of different ways to practice that don't involve pencil and paper! That is the goal...use all the different things you can find to help children make connections.
Popsicle sticks and rubber bands...
Rolling a dice and markers to practice number sense.
We are getting better at numbers 1-30! But now we need to add all the other numbers up to 100.
