Do you talk too much?

Recently, I observed a situation that included students and teachers being addressed by a leader. The time spent waiting was causing angst, fidgeting, and aggravation in the students. They were checked out and not even listening to what was being said. The looks on the teachers faces matched the attitudes on display by the students. "We rushed through the lesson for this? I could have gotten so much done in these last 10 minutes." "Are we done yet? My feet hurt." "I'm tired, now I have to clean up and figure out what is for supper for my family," The leader that was speaking was totally clueless to what was happening right in front them. There were a lot of "Ummms." "You know?" "Right?" "Do you understand?" It hit me...often teachers...especially females...talk certain things to death! Teacher, be tuned in to your audience! State what needs to be said and be done! STOP TALKING!!! ...

Teach your students about personal space!

These little misses are talking about our mini-lesson about keeping your hands to yourself and staying in your personal space. It made me smile to watch them. I demonstrated arms at my side bent at elbows like I was carrying a tray. Then moved my arms from side to side...I even turned all around in a circle..."like I am in a bubble." They made bubbles with their arms. Children are always touching each other! When uninvited or rejected, it can turn into a fight very fast. I have always had the policy "Hands off your friends!". Of course, that has morphed into feet, head, breath, looking, pencil, tongue...and so on! Standing in lines is the worst case scenario for these break downs. Teach children what to do and hold them accountable. "If you want to keep getting in your friend's personal space, come walk with me and hold my hand!" Chapter Books for Second Semester

The first half of the year is all about learning letters and sounds. I build a love of learning how to read with piles of books. I used seasonal books, holiday books, theme books, old books, and new books. We would gather around the reading chair and enjoy multiple books each day. We learned about authors and illustrators. We learned how to care for books. We talked about what we thought the book would be about by looking at the cover. We talked about all the pictures. We asked questions. We learned how to be good listeners. We used our imaginations to figure out what else could happen in the stories. And then...in January...after we read countless books about snow, winter, animals, and hibernation...it was time to break out the special books! We found special spots to lay or sit in the classroom to listen and let our brains make the pictures. I would introduce them to Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle who loved children....
