January- Flat Stanley

I found an OLD copy of the Flat Stanley book on my classroom bookshelf.  Side note:  Go through your bookshelves often!  You will find hidden treasures, especially if you inherit a classroom!  Don't go into a new place and just throw stuff away!!!  Repurpose, reuse, and recycle.  I read the book and decided this would be a fun way to make the winter months exciting.  You can go online and find a place to get roadside maps.

We took two days to read the book.  It is really a fun book and lots of laughter and discussion came easily! I found a color page of Flat Stanley and made a copy for the children to color and cut out.  I provided the stamped envelope with a letter for families to send to a friend or family member.  I sent a note to families with instructions.  Then we waited for all our Flat Stanleys to return!  It was fun to see them come from all over the United States.

My Flat Stanley went with my husband to Belgium and came back with yummy chocolate for us!  People sent us pictures and letters.  We got a treat.  We received a book.  We got stickers.  It was so fun.  We put all the adventures in a 3-ring binder for the students to look at when there was free time.  Our curriculum teaches us about the world and the United States on the map.  We also talk about children around the world and where they live.  This was a fun activity to show the children how big the world is and where place are in relation to where they live.
