We were talking about all the ways to show a number! We used 5 because of the age of Kindergarteners. We show a number with the number symbol, number word, our fingers, objects, and tally marks to start. Later we add our addition and subtraction facts. One of my little smarties asked me, "What does your number look like?" So first...I asked them what they thought my number was! WOW! We were all over the board. Then I told them my number and wrote it on the board. "Whoa! That a lot!" one friend shouted. Another said, "My Dad is only a 35!" "My Mom is only 32." I had to stop...and finally called for recess! Yes...I am old enough to be a grandma to some of these students now. Great! And as they lined up I heard, "We don't even have enough fingers to make that big number."
