March- St. Parick's Day...unexpected fun

Dollar Tree is a creative teacher's friend!  For the month of March, I use the gold coins as rewards for each good day.  Students get a little black pot to keep them in as we start the month.  The foam shamrocks were used in math class for practicing addition facts.  The day before (or if there is a weekend...spring break...plan accordingly) On March 17...St. Patrick's Day...I bring Lucky Charms cereal for a snack.  The students bring me their gold for a special treat!  I put their coins in a little bag to take home.
A fun idea a teacher shared online for March.  I have done the same idea with scarecrows, turkeys, and snowmen in past years.  Hole punches come in a variety of shapes and sizes!  It is good fine motor skill practice to grip and squeeze for students.  Also picking up the small pieces and arranging them to make a picture is great hand eye coordination practice!
On March 16, we made traps to catch a leprechaun after reading a fun book How To Catch A Leprechaun.  I added some fun to the room for when the children came in the morning on March 17.  We all wore green for fun.
OH MY!  They were so excited to see if they caught something..."NOPE! But he left me a gold coin and a treat!"  Have a bucket for each month with bits and pieces that you can use each year.  I had a baggie of green paper, green curling ribbon pieces, gold coins, green paper and foam shamrocks.
There was a lot of chatter about not catching the "funny, little, tricky man"!  We used the bits and pieces to count for math class.
Just a few minutes to make a day special...with a little whimsy and fun.
