We always have fun with Dr. Seuss in the month of March! I pull all the books into a bin and each day we read one of Dr. Seuss's books. One day a week, I plan a special day to focus on one of his better known books and we dress up, have a special snack, and do a fun craft. This particular day was Wacky Wednesday! We dressed silly and did our whole schedule backwards. Let your imagine go!
Another day The Cat in the Hat...the children were stuck inside all day because it was raining. We read lots of fun books and didn't "get in trouble with with cat"!
My special plan for reading chapter books..."Quickly find a place anywhere in the classroom to sit or lay and listen as I read. Close your eyes and imagine. If you are by a friend who you will play with or talk...move. Find a place and plant it! Here we go..." Some children take the same approach when I would say "free reading time" or "read with a buddy time".
Sometimes our buddy was another friend...and other days...it was a stuffed friend. On our special reading day, we read with our stuffed friend and our buddy! As a teacher, I sat or walked around and listened to the buzz of reading and discussing the pictures, words, and stories. Do this! Do this at least once a week...it builds the low and mid level readers when they work together with friends. Pair up your high level readers with those under their level and they become the teacher that is not so scary.

Goldfish crackers and paper cut outs of the fish for One Fish Two Fish book day! Bring literary works into your math lessons too! Addition is more fun with book characters and a little snack to add numbers.
