We wiped off numbers off the white board as I called them out. We traced numbers in the candy coated sunflowers (I found them in my pantry). We traced numbers on the colored gel in a ziploc bag. We counted little erasers for one to one correspondence. I have taken what I used in the classroom and shared with tutoring sessions. Take time to build a collection of ideas that can be used in multiple ways for a variety of practice and review for little minds and hands. Share ideas with parents that help them in talking with their children on a daily basis to build connections with the world around them. Many children need to experience a variety of methods to help their brain build the pathways of learning and remembering. NOT all children learn the same ways! NOT all children learn at the same time! The more senses you involve in daily living, the more opportunities for connections to be made.
When working with little friends, a simple review can turn into a lot of fun when you think creatively! A sensory bin or tray with little number cards hidden among the treasures. My little friend lined up the cards after he told me the number and set a little object by each one. His focus was on digging and pulling out objects and the number recognition didn't seem like schoolwork at all!
Legos, cars, little objects (toys and figurines) blocks, rocks, shells, rice, salt, flour, water, slime, playdough...the pantry and toybox are great supply resource!
