January- Make it a game

Switch It!  We built a blend and then we make it a word.  Each child has a baggie of letters in their desk.  I walk around and make sure all children have built the word and then I give a new word.  They have to figure out what letter to Switch.  We practice beginning sounds.  We try hearing the ending sound.  Then
"I'm going to make it hard...are you ready?"  I change the middle sound.  We all do this together and figure it out.  "OK, Switch It! What new word did you make?"
This was a morning activity...I had big art paper I wrote simple sentences.  There were buckets of markers that they could use to draw a picture to match the sentence.  All level readers could do this and they helped each other.  I had four large pages spread out.  The first time we did this, I just had words they had to read.
Pull out loose parts to add or sort when testing.  Some children need to see it and touch it!  Do not penalize them for that learning style.  Provide the manipulative and let them figure it out.
Matching practice never gets old!  See it...Sort it...Touch it...Feel it...Move it.  Use real money for this one!
