January- Beach Day

Who doesn't want to Break-A-Way from winter at the end of January?  Students were asked to bring in a beach towel, hat, sunglasses, flip-flops, and beach toys.  We do our regular class subjects on our beach towels.  We are up and down playing games, little break for a snack, reading, counting shells, and working with our beach buddy (because you always go to the beach with friends and you never swim alone!)
As long as they are on their towels, they can take flip-flops off.  We put socks and shoes on to go play at recess in the ocean (gym) for safety reasons.
What an imaginative group!  "I need to wear my hat and sunglasses so I can see my paper because the sun is so bright."  This is the day we begin our first chapter book!  "Lay on your towel and close your eyes...rest...listen...oh, and here is another snack!"  Cereal is a great snack when you decide at the last minute to up your game!  We had popsicles after swimming in the ocean...I mean...running in the gym for recess.
Teacher, you make it fun by using your imagination too!  I sent them home with a sunburn.  I bought an ugly shade of orange blush at Dollar Tree and used half a cotton ball for each child (think of ways for sanitary practice) and made their nose and forehead look sunburned. "Wow, I should have put more sunblock on today!  Do you think our Moms will notice?" was heard as they walked down to car line.

Mission Accomplished!  And...NO SAND!
